Pune Bicycle Partnership

The Pune Bicycle Plan was approved by PMC’s General Body on 14 December 2017. The Cycle Plan has been prepared with support from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Govt of India and includes proposals for a city-wide cycle network, a detailed project report (DPR) for a Public Bicycle Share system, cycle promotion activities, participatory reviews of plan implementation etc.

Five years after this, much needs to be accomplished in terms of the implementation of this plan. An interesting concept in the plan was that of the Pune Bicycle Partnership, a multi stakeholder city alliance working towards making the city cycling friendly through a wide range of activities. Civil society along with concerned citizens had supported the formation of such a partnership back then, but without much further development in the plan itself, the partnership also faded away. Hence, a meeting was planned and conducted to bring together supporters from then as well as others who could be potential drivers of this partnership. The meeting, held on 18th July 2023 at Indradhanushya, was focused on taking a quick review of what this partnership was meant to be and explore how it can be taken forward in the current circumstances.

The discussions focused on important aspects of this novel idea like the structure of the partnership, membership, scope of activities that could be taken up, funding and finding innovative ways to attract more people to cycling in the city. The meeting was attended by a mix of cycling enthusiasts, urban practitioners and civil society representatives keen to take this partnership ahead.

It has been planned to conduct such meetings frequently to keep pushing the agenda of Pune as a cycling city. Details of the first meeting can be found here
