Knowledge sharing on SUPs, reuse systems and inclusive street design strategies at national level meetings for street vendors

Over the past few months, Parisar was involved in capacity building of street vendors through national leadership meetings.

The national leadership meeting held in July at Kolkata saw 50 participants, where the current national leaders were informed in detail about the reuse system. They showed their interest through queries with an aim to plan and implement the same in their cities. The on-ground work done by project fellows across the cities under the project were also reviewed. They presented their field interaction experiences, challenges and further work plan to make progress.

During the months of June to September 2024, around 111 interactions were done by the project fellows, who interacted with over 2,901 street vendors and informed them about the impact of plastic throughout its lifespan on health, environment and their livelihoods. They were also informed about how plastics are produced and why it can't be recycled, what are the sustainable alternatives and the significance of the proposed reuse system.

The national meeting held in September at Manali gathered 102 participants. Following up on the actions discussed during the meeting in July, street vendors' union leaders shared their ideas of implementing the reuse pilot in their respective cities. Some of them shared their plan for identifying food vending streets for implementing the reuse system. As part of the capacity-building initiative, in addition to the usual awareness building sessions on single use plastics (SUPs) and the reuse system, informative learning modules on street design and loss & damages fund of climate change were also incorporated.
