Breathless Pune: Visualizing Air Quality Crisis

The "Breathless Pune Photo Exhibition," organized by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) under the National Clean Air Program (NCAP), served as a powerful initiative to bring the stark realities of air pollution to the forefront of public consciousness. Through compelling photography and evidence-based information, the exhibition provided citizens with an immersive look at the air quality crisis currently facing our city.

Highlighting the Issues

The exhibition curated a visual narrative that broke down complex environmental challenges into understandable, actionable insights. Visitors were guided through key themes:

  • Pollution Sources: Visual documentation of major contributors, including vehicular emissions, open waste burning, construction dust, and the use of firecrackers.

  • Health Impacts: Illustrating both acute and chronic consequences, ranging from respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses to diabetes and neurological concerns.

  • Vulnerable Populations: A special focus on those most at risk, including children, the elderly, street vendors, auto-rickshaw drivers, and traffic police personnel.

  • Actionable Solutions: Practical steps and systemic changes citizens and authorities can adopt to mitigate pollution.

Citizen Engagement and Awareness

The event received an encouraging response, welcoming over 500 visitors. The atmosphere was one of active learning; citizens of all ages engaged in deep discussions regarding air quality concerns and potential solutions.

A standout aspect of the event was the high level of participation from families. Children demonstrated remarkable curiosity and enthusiasm, interacting with the displays alongside their parents, a promising indicator of strong intergenerational interest in environmental sustainability.

To ensure the impact lasted beyond the exhibition walls, informational booklets were distributed to all attendees. These resources contained posters and simplified data on major pollutants, health risks, and everyday actions that citizens can take to improve air quality.

Interactive Participation: Public Perception

The exhibition featured an interactive "reflection" activity, where visitors were invited to mark the source they believed contributed the most to Pune’s air pollution. This exercise served two purposes:

  1. Promoting Critical Thinking: It encouraged citizens to reflect on their own environments and the daily activities that impact air quality.

  2. Gathering Insights: The activity provided valuable data on public perception, which is essential for shaping future awareness campaigns and communication strategies.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The exhibition was honored by the presence of senior officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), whose support underscored the importance of this collaborative initiative:

  • Mrs. Manjusha Nagpure, Mayor, PMC

  • Mr. Naval Kishore Ram, Municipal Commissioner, PMC

  • Mr. Prithviraj B P, Additional Municipal Commissioner, PMC

  • Mr. Omprakash Divate, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Special), PMC

  • Mr. Ganesh Sonune, Environment Officer, PMC

The exhibition successfully transformed abstract data into a tangible, human-centric issue. By combining visual storytelling, expert-led walkthroughs, and interactive engagement, the event not only strengthened public awareness but also fostered a community-wide conversation on the urgent need for cleaner air in Pune. We look forward to building on the insights gathered from this initiative to drive more informed policy advocacy in the future.
