Practically all Indian cities have chronically bad traffic conditions and air that is hardly fit to breathe. To add to this, Indian cities fare among the worst in the world in terms of their traffic safety records. Pune records more than 500 deaths every year from traffic accidents - that is well over one death every day.

Since its formation in the early 1980s, Parisar has worked in a diverse set of fields such as preservation of heritage, protection of urban bio-diversity, and sustainable agriculture. Since about the turn of the 21st century, its work focuses mainly on sustainable urban transport, since it recognizes that unsustainable transport policies and systems are the foremost threat to urban environment and quality of life.

NGOs call upon opposition parties not to oppose Bicycle Plan for Pune - Large community of cyclists support Bicycle Plan and want proper implementation.

15 January 2018, Pune

Several NGOs and the larger cycling community of Pune have called upon political parties in the PMC to support the bicycle plan and ensure its proper implementation. The bicycle plan was passed by the GB on 21st December last year, but several opposition parties have raised issues regarding the manner in which the plan was passed. The NCP and Congress have also demanded a revenue share from the Public Bike Share (PBS) companies. The issue will come up again in a special GB called for this on the 18th of this month.

City’s 25 junctions will be remade under new design

Acity-based NGO, Parisar, has come up with their own set of urban designs to revamp four major neighbourhoods in the city. The designs have been approved by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) aswell as the city traffic department. Parisar has chosen the neighbourhoods of Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Senapati Bapat Road, and Viman Nagar as these roads see the most number of pedestrians as per the organisation’s study.
