Parisar and SPTM publish the Transportation Status Report 2012-13

Parisar and Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM) have jointly published the Transportation Status Report by Citizens 2012-13 for Pune city. This is a first of its kind report in India, following on the lines of Environmental Status Report published by the Pune Municipal Corporation every year. By documenting and analysing the current state of transportation in the city, the report can be very useful in identifying bottlenecks as well as suggest plans and projects to improve transport situation in the city.

The report takes into account nine aspects of urban transportation, quantified and analysed on the basis of surveys and data found in Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Pune and the Service Level Benchmarks for Urban Transportation published by the Ministry of Urban Development.

Out of the 9 aspects, those of cycling facilities, parking on main roads and modal share scored poorly. Safety, pedestrian facilities and public transport scored average, while travel time and pollution parameters scored well.

To assess the modal share of traffic, 3600 people were surveyed in detail, leading to some interesting results. It was found that private vehicle usage has increased to 47% (35% two wheeler, 12% car) in the city. At the same time, public transport usage was found to be less than 19%, with PMPML and auto rickshaws constituting only 8%. The remaining were private buses.

A score card of the nine parameters is as follows;
